Cody Simpson has revealed that he was bullied because he wanted to be a singer.
The Australian singer, who relocated to Los Angeles last year to pursue his dream of being the next Justin Bieber, said that kids picking on him at school only increased his desire to succeed in life.Simpson told The Age: “I’ve seen the severity of bullying, just being a regular kid coming from a regular school, it’s a bigger problem for kids my age than drugs and alcohol.
“I was teased a little bit for choosing a career path that not many kids do, a lot of kids were doing other things like joining the rugby team, but music was just something I loved.”
Simpson continued: “I just learned very early to not care what other people think, the music teacher at my old school used to let me into the music room when everyone else was running off to do other things as it was just something that I loved.”
The 14-year-old, who now shares the same management as My World singer Bieber, said that a duet “will happen in the future”, but admitted that they “haven’t set anything in stone yet”.
He also revealed that his career highlights have been meeting “chilled out” president Barack Obama and performing on Ellen DeGeneres’s chatshow.
Simpson recently insisted that getting older doesn’t worry him.
“My voice was a little higher when I put out [my last single],” he said. “Everyone was like, ‘Yeah this kid won’t be able to sing when his voice changes, he’ll have no career’. But it’s gotten much better.”
